CPL 2023 – Guyana Amazon Warriors vs Barbados Royals Tips and Betting Preview

The second half of the double header of action in the Caribbean Premier League on Sunday sees the CPL 2023 regular season coming to a close and it could be a big one as the Guyana Amazon Warriors and the Barbados Royals.

Were the Jamaica Tallawahs to lose earlier in the day, the Barbados Royals would be able to book a spot in the playoffs with a win here. Guyana are already safely into the latter stages of the event and guaranteed to top the table.

Guyana Amazon Warriors

The Guyana Amazon Warriors have already had a good home leg to their season. They entered it needing one win from four to guarantee a top two finish and the two bites of the cherry to make the final which comes along with it. They achieved that in the first game and then they put the icing on the cake on Saturday evening when they beat the Trinbago Knight Riders, the team they will face in Qualifier 1 in midweek, to get a psychological advantage.

It will be interesting to see how the Amazon Warriors approach this match. There is absolutely nothing on it for them so they could go about resting all of those who need a rest. The injury picked up by Keemo Paul on Saturday night might strengthen the likelihood that they go down that route. They might also choose to get some time into the middle for those who haven’t had much of it so their batting order will be interesting to see.

Barbados Royals

The Barbados Royals will be hoping that the St Lucia Kings do them a favour earlier in the day and if that happens then everything is on the line for them in this one. They will be into the knockout stages of the competition should they win this match but their season definitely be done if they lose this match regardless of what happens earlier in the day. The positive for the Royals coming in here is they have had a week to gear themselves up for this challenge.

The other positive for Barbados is that they know they should have beaten the Guyana Amazon Warriors in the reverse meeting. They choked in the final over with the bat when they had the match there to be won but they got themselves in position to win which not a lot of teams have done against Guyana. If Barbados are going to win this one they are going to need one of, if not their best, bowling performances of the season.

Key Players

Shimron Hetmyer went up to number four on Saturday night presumably with the aim of getting some time in the middle for him but he only faced four balls. He might be elevated here and could be a huge player if he is.

The start to this match is going to be massive for the Barbados Royals, especially if they are still alive in the competition. That makes Kyle Mayers a key man given that he’ll open the batting and most likely start the bowling off too.

Betting

I think the Barbados Royals are a bit of value here. Admittedly it is a bit dodgy betting on these night games before we know the outcome of the toss because it is no surprise that all three night matches have been won by the chasing side but I expect the Royals to be a lot closer to full strength than the Guyana Amazon Warriors with this likely to be their last outing of the season which is certainly not the case for the home side. That doesn’t equate to victory for Barbados but puts them on the right track.

Even if we consider the scenario where the chasing side wins the game as has been the case so far, it is a 50:50 shot that Barbados bowl first and yet they are 13/10 to win the match which is better than the even money to be chasing so we are getting good value. Whether they are still in the tournament or not Barbados will want to win. This match is just an inconvenience for Guyana so I’ll side with the Royals in this one.
