Premier League 2023-24 – Man Utd vs Wolves Tips, TV and Betting Preview

The opening weekend of the Premier League season concludes with the Monday Night Football, which this week comes from Old Trafford as Manchester United begin what they hope will be a title challenge against Wolverhampton Wanderers.

United are very much giving off the impression that they are looking up this term whereas Wolves might end up looking over their shoulder after a summer to forget. It will be interesting to see if that is how this one plays out.

Where to watch

The match will be shown live and in full on the Monday Night Football programme which begins at 6.30pm this season. Kick off at Old Trafford comes at 8pm.

Manchester United

The first season of the Erik ten Hag was a successful one for Manchester United. They achieved a top four finish and got back in the silverware with their win in the Carabao Cup and season two should bring about improvement. That will reflect a title challenge and maybe a tilt at one of the bigger cups that they are involved in and if all of that is going to come to fruition then they have to be beating teams such as Wolves at home.

It has been a relatively quiet summer at Old Trafford in terms of players in. They have brought Andre Onana and Mason Mount in earlier in the pre-season but Rasmus Hojlund was the player they chased and finally got their man. There is a thought process that he is the number nine who will take them to the next level and if that is true then this should be a better season for United, although you suspect it is defensively where their fortunes will be decided.

Wolverhampton Wanderers

If it has been a quiet summer at Old Trafford it has been anything but at Molineux, although unfortunately for Wolverhampton Wanderers it has been the exit door getting the most use rather the than the one for those coming in. We knew they had issues with the financial rules and they have lost some big players as a result of that, and although the window is still open, it remains to be seen whether they will get the chance to replace them.

This is a Wolves side who have been teetering with the trap door for the last season or two and as well as the players they have lost they then saw their manager walk out on them less than a week before the campaign started which isn’t ideal. To be fair to them, they moved quickly to bring Gary O’Neil in but you wonder if he’ll be able to do what he did at Bournemouth with his hands more tied in the midlands. Whether he can or he can’t remains to be seen but you would think his back is against the wall here.

Team News

Manchester United are expected to give Premier League debuts to Andre Onana and Mason Mount but Red Devils’ fans will need to wait a while to see Rasmus Hojlund. Dean Henderson, Tyrell Malacia and Amad Diallo miss out here too.

Gary O’Neil is expected to give a return debut to Matt Doherty who has returned to the club after finishing last season at Atletico Madrid. O’Neil has suggested that Matheus Cunha will be available even though he has missed training.

Betting

Wolverhampton Wanderers were the lowest scorers in the Premier League last season with just 31 goals in 38 matches and when you think that they have lost their two best midfielders in Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho it is hard to see how they are immediately going to offer much in this match, especially when they have had such a short period of time under Gary O’Neil. They might improve over time but this looks like a tough assignment for the visitors.

To me, this one is all about Manchester United and if they are ruthless in both boxes then I find it hard to believe that they won’t win this game. They only slipped up in four home matches last season and are turning Old Trafford into a fortress once again. Of the 31 goals Wolves scored last season, just 12 of them came on their travels and there is no getting away from the fact that on paper at least Wolves look a lot weaker here. Odds against on United to win to nil looks too good to turn down.
