SA20 2024 – Durban’s Super Giants vs Sunrisers Eastern Cape Tips and Betting Preview

There is a double header of action to enjoy in the SA20 season on Saturday and it begins at Kingsmead where the Durban’s Super Giants host the Sunrisers Eastern Cape looking for a second win of the season over the defending champions.

These two met in Gqeberta earlier in the competition in a high scoring clash which the Super Giants came out on top in and they’ll extend their lead at the top if they can win here. The Sunrisers won their latest match though and will move into third with victory here.

Durban’s Super Giants

The Durban’s Super Giants looked like they were going to be the all dominating force in this competition with the way they opened up their season with three successive wins but they had their wings clipped last time out when they lost to the Pretoria Capitals so they will be looking to get back on the horse here. I still think they are the most fearsome team in this competition and teams will have to play mighty well to get the better of them, which the Capitals did to be fair to them.

There is serious brutality with the bat for the Super Giants. Even when they lose Nicholas Pooran to the ILT20 they have Marcus Stoinis coming in to replace him and of course they have Heinrich Klaasen to power them to any score. There are still concerns over this Durban attack though. In three out of four innings they have conceded 190 or more and in the other one the pitch wasn’t of the standard of the rest of the competition.

Sunrisers Eastern Cape

After a washout in their opening match and then feeling the full force of the Durban’s Super Giants batting in their second game, it was important that the Sunrisers Eastern Cape got off the mark for the season in their third match, and to their credit they held off the challenge of the MI Cape Town side. Had they gone three matches without a win then questions would have been being asked over the legitimacy of their title defence but now they can get on with the job in hand.

You do have to have one or two concerns over the Sunrisers bowling, but then you did going into the season with top wicket taker from last term Roelof van der Merwe opting for the ILT20 rather than this tournament. In their two matches they have conceded 225/3 and 198/5 and they’re not scores that are going to bring much success. The positive is that they look really good with the bat with their top order already all in the runs, which is certainly no bad thing.

Key Players

With the Sunrisers’ top order in good shape Durban’s Super Giants need a bowler to step up and be counted at the top of the innings and that could well be Reece Topley who took 3-34 in a losing effort last time out.

Dawid Malan immediately showed why he was once the top ranked T20I batter in the world when he made a 50 in his opening match in the Sunrisers colours and the England man will want to keep scoring runs with a T20 World Cup fast approaching.

Betting

I’m expecting a high scoring match here as the reverse meeting between these two was but the last game on this ground had a pitch which didn’t really play well at all and that puts me off a little bit. I expect a high scoring game because neither of these bowling units are firing that well so far this season but if the conditions begin to offer some assistance then you would have to think that they could get stuck in here so I’ll think outside the box for a bet on this one.

That comes in the form of Heinrich Klaasen to score more than 21.5 runs. He is one man who has had no trouble with the pitches on this ground. He made 85 in 35 balls here against the MI Cape Town in the first match at this venue and on a dodgy pitch in the second one he was still able to contribute 64 from 41 when only two other batters in the match made it to 20. We know he is in unbelievable form and although he missed out in Centurion last time out that might only make him more determined to fill his boots here. I’ll play him to cover that run line and then push on and be named the player of the match, as he was in both of those matches I referenced.
