Super League XXVIII – Wakefield Trinity vs Warrington Wolves Tips and Betting Preview

The Super League XXVIII weekend concludes on Sunday when the final match of the latest round of games takes place in what could very easily have been a bottom against top clash but isn’t quite that as Wakefield Trinity host Warrington Wolves.

Warrington flew out of the traps this season but have hit an insurmountable brick wall in recent times. Wakefield took forever to get going this term but they have found a groove recently and it will be interesting to see if those form lines continue here. There is no TV coverage of this game so you’ll need to keep up with it digitally if you don’t have a ticket.

Wakefield Trinity

When you consider that it took them 15 attempts to finally get a win on the board this season, you would think that Wakefield Trinity would just have tamely meandered through to the end of the campaign bottom of the table. They have a lot more pride in themselves than that though and that first win has brought two more with it and were they to add another one to their tally here they would be level on points with Castleford who are the team above them.

That will be a huge incentive for Trinity, who have the knowledge and knowhow of having negotiated this situation in the past on a few occasions. Those wins were over Wigan, Leeds and Salford so they were genuine victories, although they were well beaten by Huddersfield last time out which should serves as a reminder that if they are not quite on it they will be beaten. They have reinforced a touch since their last outing and that might be significant too.

Warrington Wolves

Conversely, when Warrington Wolves won their opening eight matches in Super League this term there were many thinking that this would be the season that they have threatened to deliver pretty much since the competition came into existence. The interesting thing was always going to be how they would respond to setback and the answer is that it wasn’t positively. They head to Yorkshire having lost eight of their last 11 Super League matches.

That includes their last four and six of their last seven and in all of those matches the Wolves have conceded more than 20 points so their defence has gone missing in the middle third of the season. Their attack is no longer delivering the goods either so there is no doubt that the week off for the Challenge Cup came at a perfect time for Warrington. They will need to hope that the time they would have spent searching for answers have been to the right questions.

Team News

Wakefield Trinity are set to give a debut to Innes Senior after he joined on loan from Huddersfield recently. Luke Gale has been named in the squad for this fixture as well so he could also come in to strengthen Trinity.

Warrington Wolves are expected to have a number of key men back after missing the defeat to Wigan last time out. Matty Ashton, Josh Thewlis, George Williams and Matty Nicholson all missed that match but are in line to return here. Jordan Crowther is ineligible against his former club as part of the transfer deal.

Betting

I keep expecting Warrington Wolves to come good again but it doesn’t seem to be happening however even allowing for that I can’t be backing them at 1/2 with their recent form even though with the personnel they will have on the park they should win this match. Wakefield Trinity are understandably shortening in line with the Warrington form but I’m not yet at the stage where I want to be trusting them with my money so I’ll look elsewhere for a punt in this one.

This is a fixture with a recent history of points and given the need of the two sides I’m not expecting anything different here. Warrington’s defence has left them completely in recent times but the Wakefield one hasn’t been a lot better. Wakefield are showing more purpose in attack and Warrington have to start taking risks in attack else their season is just going to fizzle out. The last five Super League meetings between these two have had at least 50 points and with two weak defences on show here I think we can see over 42.5 points in this one.
